How
much does a web site cost? This is the number one question I hear.
And honestly, this is the hardest question to answer when we are
discussing an estimate.
Web
Design is like building a house. When you build a house you need
land, for a web site that land is your domain name. A domain name
is your cyberspace real estate. It needs to be thought of as such
too. It should be in your name or your business name and NEVER a
designers name. A domain name will cost around $10.00 per year.
My recommendation for an established business is to purchase your
domain name for 5 or 10 years at a time.
Next
is your floor plan. For a web site, your floor plan is called a
'story board', or the layout of your site. The layout of the site
consists of breaking your information down into logical sections,
and then connecting those sections together by placing links on
your site. Some sections are services provided, contact information
and so forth. Think of these sections as rooms in your floor plan.
I will guide you through this process by helping you gather and
organize your information, and then making suggestions on your web
site layout and content. This is a very important step that takes
experience and knowledge. The foundation must be solid.
Next
is the interior of the home. Do you keep the standard fixtures or
upgrade? Web design also has standards and upgrades. Upgrades are
refereed to as add- on's. An add- on is a slide show or Flash multi-media
movie or presentation. It also could be in a request information
form or a message board. Standard fixtures in web design is a good
navigation with an aesthetically pleasing layout and design. Also
standard is search engine optimized with correct meta tags and clean
coding. You can have a professional web site with no add- on's.
Its all about what you want.
Add-
on costs vary greatly. The most expensive is a Flash movie and the
least expensive is a request information form with shopping carts
falling in the middle.
I
hope by explaining the process of web development and by associating
it to the home building process, it will give you a better understanding
of "What does it take to build a web site and how much does
it cost?" Read my 'Getting
Started' page to learn more about how to begin the process.
