How to get started developing your web site..

Congratulations for starting the web development process! Most clients I have talked to have procrastinated this step for a year or two before actually rolling up their sleeves. Give yourself a pat on the back! Make 2005 your year to get that web site up and running!

  1. As a first step, I always recommend, search your local competitors, and then looking at similar business web sites across the USA.
  2. Grab a piece of paper and pencil and take notes. Pay attention to the details of the web sites.
  3. What is their content? What information are they providing? What information are they not providing that you think is important? How is the information broken down into sections or pages?
  4. Do you like vertical navigational buttons or horizontal? Rollover buttons or plain?
  5. What color schemes to you like? What colors go with your business image or logo?

What's next?

Start interviewing local designers. You will want to pick someone with experience and professionalism. This is not for a high school kid, nor for a friend. There is more to developing web sites than learning HTML in a class.

You will also want to consider personality. Can you communicate well with your designer? This is a project that you will update and keep fresh. It is extremely important that you have a good rapport with your web developer. Creating a web site is a team effort and communication is essential in the development process.
